The Lion King (2019)- Trailer Review

The “live-action” (which is really just some dope-ass CGI animation) Disney‘s The Lion King, which hits theaters this Summer (July 19), just dropped a fresh trailer a few days ago. In case some people have been hiding under a rock or just staying off social media to avoid cussing Trump out every other minute (I get it), this new version stars Donald Glover (Simba), James Earl Jones (Mufasa), Beyonce Knowles-Carter (Nala), Eric Andre (Azizi), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Scar), Billy Eilish (Timon), and Seth Rogen (Pumbaa).

And, every time Disney releases anything related to this highly-anticipated movie, folks lose their goddamn minds. While some fans are relishing in the fact that Disney is bringing back this 90s classic; others are scraping the bottom of the barrel to point out everything that's wrong with it, after watching a two-minute trailer. Some were mad as hell because “the colors don’t pop like they did in the original.” Others were upset because “new” Scar didn’t resemble “old” Scar. (Yeah, he’s missing his green colored-contacts and his black silky mane in this one.)

I don’t understand how people fail to realize that the goal is to make the new version appear to be live-action. They have to come correct for the 25-year anniversary, right? Therefore, the current CGI-animation team is going to make the animals and their surroundings look as authentic as possible. Remember, it’s 2019—not 1994, people.

Another thing that ruffled quite a few feathers, was the fact that the producers, apparently decided against bringing back British actor Jeremy Irons to fulfill the role of Scar. Irons voiced the character in the original movie, nearly 25 years ago, and I admit that his voice definitely fit the character’s persona. But, this time around, the powers-that-be selected Academy-Award nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor to voice the sinister villain.

In my opinion, as long as they don’t switch up the story, I’m excited to go see this movie the day that it drops. It sucks a little that we won’t hear Jeremy Irons’ distinct voice in this one; but, there’s no doubt that Ejiofor will step in and handle his own assignment accordingly.

I’ve concluded that the soundtrack, this time around, is going to be pretty dope. In addition to Donald Glover’s and Beyonce’s rendition of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”, I’m willing to bet money that there will be some new music sprinkled in there somewhere. And, I’m here for every single note.

I can honestly say that I’m really enthusiastic to see how this new adaptation turns out. But, Disney, can we at least get a 4-minute trailer? I’m just asking for a friend. Thanks.
