Whether we love it or hate it, we can’t deny that Atlanta rapper/country singer Lil Nas X took us all by surprise when he dropped his hip-hop/country-infused “Old Town Road” and it shot to the top of the charts late last year. But, when we got that remix featuring Mr. Achy-Breaky-Heart himself, Billy Ray Cyrus (yep, Miley’s daddy, for the youngins), the already-popular track was catapulted into a whole new stratosphere. “Old Town Road” was streamed nearly 150 million times during the last week of April, breaking Drake’s record of 116 million streams for “In My Feelings”.

Let’s get into it.
First of all, I have to say that I’m proud to see an actual concept for a music video in 2019.
“Old Town Road” opens up like a million other western movies, where you see a bank robber (Lil Nas X) on horseback running from the lawmen, with the head lawman being, none other than funny man, Chris Rock. Sherriff Rock, who’s also on horseback with his squad, decides that trying to catch that Black man on that horse is pointless, and Lil Nas X, along with his partner, Billy Ray, get away.
Once they think they’re safe and out of the lawmen’s grips, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray are targeted by some hillbilly who attempts to shoot them for being on his property. Lil Nas X escapes by falling through a time travel tunnel that flings him out of 1889 and dumps him into the present day ‘hood.
The Black people in the neighborhood eyeball him, with their mouthes open, like he’s some freak from another dimension or something. Of course, he must be an alien, trotting around the ‘hood on his horse, while wearing his finest cowboy attire.
Once he wins the people over after racing his horse against at 1995 Chevy Impala, and winning, he meets up with Billy Ray and they hit up bingo night and perform for all the cowboys and cowgirls while they show off their line dancing skills.
This video, which Lil Nas X refers to as a movie, contains all the elements that makes it a dope visual piece. Combining the effects, the comedy, the chase, the cameos, the costumes, along with the catchy tune, might just be the recipe that “Old Town Road” needs to win video of the year.
