Yes, there’s finally been a little extra color included in the recently announced 2022 Academy Awards, also known as ‘The Oscars’, nominations. From the legendary Mr. Training Day himself, to an actress just beginning to get her shine, best known for her TV role as the fearless Hippolyta Freeman, check out the list of talent that’s in the running to take home the gold statue.

Nominated for Best Make-Up and Hairstyling: Coming 2 America: The long-awaited sequel to the 1988 comedy classic, Coming To America, starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall. Similar to the original, Coming 2 America looked amazing with the original Afro-centric pieces created by Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter.

Nominated for Best Documentary: Summer of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) This is artist Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s debut as filmmaker. Summer of Soul… details the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which featured legendary artists such as Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & The Family Stone, Gladys Knight & The Pips, B.B. King, Mahalia Jackson and more.

Nominated for Best Original Song (King Richard): “Be Alive” written and performed by the Queen Bey herself, Beyonce Knowles-Carter. This is Beyonce’s first Academy-Award nomination.

Nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Picture: King Richard is the biographical drama, that follows the life of Richard Williams, the father and coach of athletic powerhouses, Venus and Serena Williams, who also executive produced the film.

Nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (King Richard): Aunjanue Ellis, widely-known for her role in the critically-acclaimed HBO series, Lovecraft Country, as Hippolyta Freeman. Although Ellis is not new to the industry (she’s been in the business since 1995), she is finally getting to shine in powerhouse roles.

Nominated for Best Lead Actor (King Richard): Will Smith has been nominated for the third time in the best lead actor category, playing a real-life character. He was nominated for his role as legendary boxer, Muhammad Ali, in Ali (2002), then again, in another biographical drama, The Pursuit of Happyness (2007). If Mr. Smith nabs this one, this will be the 53 year-old actor’s first Oscar win.

Nominated for Best Lead Actor (The Tragedy of Macbeth): Legendary actor and previous Oscar winner, Denzel Washington, is in the running again for another Academy Award. Washington, who won for Training Day (2002), twenty years ago has hit the silver screen again in a huge way. This time he takes on the role as Lord Macbeth, in this historical thriller, written and directed by Joel Cohen.
